What is an OVAL Self-Test?

OVAL Self-Test

The OVAL Self-Test is an assessment that measures the health of your metabolic system and provides solutions to improve it. OVAL currently offers two Self-Tests: Wellness Self-Test and Performance Self-Test. With the Self-Tests, you can check your progress and receive feedback every 3 weeks.

Who is the Self-Guided Program for?

The Self-Guided Program, which includes the Self-Test, is for individuals who want to assess their metabolic system in the comfort of their own home or gym, might not have access to a Concierge Program, or may be transitioning from a Concierge Program to a Self-Guided Program. Additionally, there may be a lower cost associated with the Self-Guided Program, depending on your OVAL subscription and/or provider.

How does it work?

The Self-Guided Program begins after a Member signs up and prepares for their Self-Test. The Member puts aside between 20-40 minutes to conduct the Self-Test. Using a stationary bike, Members will pedal at the listed wattage and suggested RPMs and rate their effort level at multiple stages. At each stage the intensity of pedaling will increase. The OVAL app walks Members through the process every step of the way. At the end of the Self-Test, the Member will receive their metabolic score - called the MetFlex Index - and their SMART Movement Program. Members with an MFI of 40 or higher will also receive the Performance Movement Program as part of their overall Movement Program.

Wellness & Performance Self-Tests

The Wellness Self-Test is for everybody. The Performance Self-Test is for elite athletes or those with a MetFlex Index of 40 or above.

Does the Self-Test provide an accurate assessment of training zones? Is a Self-Test as accurate as a SMART Test?

The Self-Test, like the SMART Test, is more accurate and precise at determining training zones over historical methods (e.g., age-based heart rates). The SMART Test directly measures blood lactate, where the Self-Test predicts lactate.

What is Blood Lactate Prediction?

The OVAL Self-Test predicts your blood lactate thresholds, a critical parameter that sheds light on the body's current fitness level, provides insight into how you use energy like fats and carbs, and provides insight into your overall metabolic health. We’ve collected blood lactate sampling from OVAL SMART Tests which provides OVAL a unique insight into patterns of blood lactate. Our ability to predict your blood lactate levels provides deeper insight into your current metabolic health and fitness in the comfort and privacy of your own home or gym. The results also provide effective, individualized training intensities based on biology rather than estimating this intensity based on your age or on a percent of maximum methods you typically see on exercise machines or in various fitness apps.

Why is Blood Lactate Important?

Blood lactate has many functions. One primary function of blood lactate is as a fuel, especially for our muscles. Monitoring blood lactate levels allows us to gauge metabolic efficiency and helps us to understand how well the body adapts to varying energy and stress demands. This nuanced approach provides a comprehensive understanding of your health and the health of your metabolic system, setting the stage for personalized movement strategies that enhance overall health.

Why Choose the OVAL Self-Test?

The OVAL Self-Test is more than just a fitness tool—it’s a gateway to understanding your body’s metabolic system and unlocking sustainable health. By regularly tracking your metabolic health improvements and aligning your training with your personal biology, you may achieve meaningful and lasting improvements in your overall fitness and health. Whether you’re seeking a flexible, at-home solution or transitioning to a Self-Guided Program, the OVAL Self-Test empowers you with actionable insights to move smarter, live healthier, and reach your goals with confidence.
